The Alberta Public Health Association (APHA) is a provincial not-for-profit association that has maintained public health advocacy at the forefront of its activities since it was founded in 1943. The APHA’s longstanding history as the independent voice for public health in Alberta therefore presents the opportunity to draw lessons from history concerning effective public health advocacy. Advocacy, which refers to the process whereby collective action is taken to influence decision-making at various levels of government, is an essential component of public health. In public health, advocacy is often conducted by non-profit organizations that mobilize diverse sets of knowledge and expertise to bring action on issues of concern. Our presentation explores the history of the APHA and its advocacy activities from multiple perspectives.

Speakers:

Kelsey Lucyk, Rogelio Velez Mendoza, Isabel Ciok, Dr. Lindsay McLaren, Dr. Frank Stahnisch
