Provincial Dr. John Waters Memorial Public Health Award: Now accepting applications

Nominees must have made demonstrable contributions in all four of the goals of the Dr. John Waters Memorial Award:
  • The development of national, provincial and/or regional public health policy
  • The promotion and protection of the health of infants and children
  • Immunization and control/elimination of communicable diseases, and
  • The delivery of public health programs

Dr. John Waters Memorial Fund

The Dr. John Waters Memorial Fund was established to recognize Dr. Waters' leadership in the field of public health. Dr. Waters was a visionary champion of children's health, a pioneer in population-based immunization programs, and an acknowledged public health expert in Canada, and internationally.

Three awards honoring Dr. John Waters include:

1. Dr. John Waters Memorial Graduate Scholarship:  Annually, the Dr. John Waters Memorial Graduate Scholarship of $1000 is presented to an eligible graduate student at the University of Alberta or the University of Calgary on an alternating basis. The application process is included in student award and scholarship information at each university.

2. National Dr. John Waters Memorial Lecture: Biannually, at the national level, the Dr. John Waters Memorial Lecture is presented by esteemed Public Health leaders at the Canadian Immunization Conference on the invitation of the conference planning committee

3. Provincial Dr. John Waters Memorial Public Health Award:
Biannually, at the provincial level, the Dr. John Waters Memorial Award of $2000 is presented at the Alberta Public Health Association annual general meeting. This award supports an individual or team currently working in the fields of child health and immunization. Nominations for the Provincial Dr. John Waters Memorial Public Health Award can be submitted for health professionals who have excelled in the following:
- The development of national, provincial and/or regional public health policy
- The promotion and protection of the health of infants and children
- Immunization and control/elimination of communicable diseases; and
- Delivery of public health programs
A call for award nominations for the Provincial Dr. John Waters Memorial Public Health Award are made every second year.
